Importance of Sleep
August 20, 2021
Just last week, we saw our last "after 8pm" sunset of the year in the Eastern Time Zone. The harkening of longer rays and shorter days, as Summer winds down, allow us to reflect on the back half of the year and what we still want to accomplish.
The natural cycle between seasons and new school years reminds us just how important sleep is for our body to perform at its peak. Life naturally gets busier and more hectic as back to school draws nearer, yet sleep needs to remain a priority.
Sleep is vital to every human for sustaining a balanced life just as breathing, eating, and drinking. Sufficient sleep can be a potent energizer, however, sleep deprivation can leave one drained, sluggish and lacking mental clarity.
Our bodies thrive on routines - the push and pull of wakefulness and sleep are key ingredients to a healthy body and a clear mind. How much we sleep varies by individual, but most non-experts agree that somewhere between 7-9 hours per night does the job. Even our "littles" with their new school schedules need consistent quietude.
Sleep is extremely productive--a sense of renewal happens when we drift off on our pillow. During sleep, the body and mind are regenerating strength, while at the same time reinforcing the day's actions and memories. Our body demands the daily wind-down, and it's our job to answer that call.
Better nights mean really do mean better days--- As we prepare for re-entry to school and work this Fall, let's all agree that restful sleep is the common ground known to bestow the gifts of clarity, wisdom, thoughtfulness and a fresh perspective at daybreak.
